Description
As with others, Guldry's first step in amateur astronomy was building a telescope. It is a meticulous and time-consuming job, but one that can cost as little as $25. However Guldry, a self-styled perfectionist, spent $200.
Amateurs generally use periscope-like reflecting telescopes in which the main component is a light-gathering concave mirror. The mirror sits in the bottom of the 'scope's tube, and reflects its image back up the tube to a much smaller, flat mirror.
