Fred Barnes, 25, a Korean War Veteran, left, pole vaulted 14'8" for the year's top collegiate mark in the United States. In so doing in Saturday night's California Relays where he tied with Reverend Bob Richards, right and also beat the record set by his Fresno State coach, Cornelius Warmerdam, while student. Richards waived his claim to the first place watch in tribute to Red's performance.
